Evening Hours Dominate Mobile Internet Usage and Content Downloading Among Regional Wireless Subscribers

Approximately 30 percent of regional wireless users prefer the hours between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time for mobile Web browsing and content purchasing. ClearSky Mobile Media, a leading provider of managed mobile browsing services and content to regional wireless carriers, identified top revenue-generating hours by analyzing the mobile browsing and downloading trends of approximately 1 million regional wireless subscribers.

According to ClearSky’s WAP analytics tool—ProTrends BI—content purchases peaked between 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., while WAP usage peaked between 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The hours between 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. account for the lowest percentage of mobile usage. The report reveals a steady increase of WAP usage throughout the day with a slight a decline before midnight—thus confirming the reality that mobile phones have transformed from a mere luxury tool, to an “always on” device, considered by millions as a necessity.

ClearSky’s ProTrends BI provides a detailed view into subscribers’ data usage behavior by transforming obscure log files from a carrier’s WAP gateway and content management system into meaningful information. ProTrends BI can be configured to report on a rolling schedule from 30 days to 12 months of data, to facilitate customized trend analysis, or to measure the success of marketing programs.

This valuable information allows carriers to understand how subscribers use their data services, which is vital to growing mobile Internet browsing and content download business. By identifying mobile browsing and downloading trends, business decisions can be made to better service a specific subscriber base. In doing so, carriers will increase data revenue, save money, and reduce churn by improving customer loyalty.

ClearSky Mobile Media Acquires Business Operations of Preferred Voice, Inc.

ClearSky Mobile Media, Inc., a leading provider of managed mobile data services and content to regional wireless carriers, today announced the acquisition of substantially all assets and clients of mobile content pioneer, Preferred Voice, Inc. (PVI). As a result of the acquisition, ClearSky added nearly two million subscribers, and now owns and operates the technologically superior “Rockin’ Ringback” platform.

The U.S. mobile data market grew 6 percent in the second quarter of 2010, reaching service revenues of $13.2 billion, according to data collected by Chetan Sharma Consulting. With data revenue currently accounting for 31 percent of operator ARPU, deploying a quality suite of data services is crucial to a carrier’s future. Integrating the ringback tone (RBT) platform with ClearSky’s Unified Media Center (UMC), which was completed in late 2009, significantly advanced ClearSky’s broad array of mobile data services and positioned its carrier clients to continue to grow their data revenues and profits. ClearSky’s Unified Media Center is a single content storefront complete with major-label ringtones, ringback tones, images, games and video clips.

PVI launched the first commercially available ringback tone service in the United States in late 2004. The ringback service enable users to choose an audio file that callers hear while the phone rings, replacing the traditional ringing sound. The service allows for personalization, a feature that is especially popular in the youth market.

“PVI and ClearSky have enjoyed a mutually beneficial business relationship for several years, first with PVI as a supplier of downloadable content to ClearSky, and more recently as partners to deploy single content storefronts to a number of regional carriers,” said ClearSky President and CEO, Bill Poellmitz. “The tight integration between ClearSky’s UMC and PVI’s “Rockin’ Ringback” platform, now in production for over six months, is already the foundation for incremental data revenue growth for ClearSky’s existing and new clients.”
