ClearSky Technologies and Cisco Align to Expand Small Cell Business

ClearSky Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of hosted mobile data infrastructure and managed services to wireless operators, today announced its strategic relationship with Cisco Systems, Inc. to offer Small Cell as a Service (SCaaS) on the industry-standard Cisco Small Cell Gateway infrastructure along with a complete line of indoor and outdoor small cells for 3G, LTE and Wi-Fi technologies. The two small cell innovators have teamed up to support a range of services including wireless operator demonstrations, pilots and production rollouts.

“ClearSky’s role as a neutral third party grants us the flexibility to service the specific needs of wireless operators now and extend our indoor coverage solutions to building owners and enterprises in the future,” said ClearSky SVP of Business Development Dean Fresonke. “Aligning with Cisco is the next step to further advance our Small Cell as a Service (SCaaS) offering to operators in North and South America and the Caribbean. The new gateway supports small cells from a wide variety of vendors, and runs industry-standard protocols that support inter-connection with any vendors’ voice and data networks.”

ClearSky’s Small Cell as a Service can be deployed by wireless operators to cost-effectively address a number of operational challenges: offloading data traffic from their core networks, improving in-building coverage (i.e., office buildings, big box stores, malls, etc.), eliminating poor coverage within subscriber residences, and reducing roaming costs by filling coverage gaps in their own markets. ClearSky’s hosted small cell gateway together with a complete lineup of plug-and-play residential and enterprise small cell access points (APs) provides the platform to address all of these challenges. Offering this technology as a hosted service puts small cell deployment within reach for all operators.

NetView 360 Helps Carriers Identify Optimal Locations for Small Cell Placement

ClearSky Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of hosted mobile data infrastructure and managed services to wireless operators, today announced its acquisition of Xtelytics Solutions, which includes NetView 360, an innovative service platform that enables operators to accurately plan the placement of small cells for indoor, outdoor, low-power, high-power or Wi-Fi with 1 meter accuracy. NetView 360 enables operators to confidently model coverage, capacity, and subscriber improvements through a combination of advanced traffic analysis, high-resolution RF planning, backhaul and real estate assessment, and comparative business case analysis.

“ClearSky launched Small Cell as a Service (SCaaS) for wireless operators in 2012, and we are continuing to pioneer approaches for deploying small cell technology with the launch of NetView 360,” said Dean Fresonke, ClearSky SVP of Business Development. “We believe this platform fits hand-in-glove with our SCaaS offering because, among other benefits, it helps MNOs identify the type, location and quantity of small cells to be deployed in their HetNet to achieve the best outcome.”

Operators and industry experts around the world recognize small cells as the most effective solution to fill coverage gaps and increase network capacity; FierceWireless calls the technology “indispensible for operators.” However, operators unable to pinpoint the best locations and analyze the impact to the entire wireless network will not realize the full benefits. Answering questions such as “Where will small cells have the most impact?” “Should they be indoor or outdoor?” or “How much will they improve my macrocell network performance?” is difficult if not impossible with other planning methodologies.

NetView 360 is the first logical step in HetNet deployment, producing accurate and easy-to-understand results regardless of the carrier size or coverage area. The process starts with a new approach to traffic modeling that incorporates a wide variety of public and private big data to create detailed 4m indoor and outdoor traffic maps. The service then employs a proprietary method for creating 3D building outlines that can be applied to virtually any city or town to generate RF propagation modeling at sub 1-meter accuracy. The platform’s sophisticated methodology takes into account outdoor attachment points, in-building geometry and availability of backhaul, and presents side-by-side comparisons of different deployment options. The results produced by NetView 360 validate both the technical and business cases for small cell deployment.
